Again, this all seems like a very reasonable thing to do. This is a niche movie so I went straight to the niche community to try to find it. I thought someone here might have a direct download or link posted in an obscure forum that might not make it to the first dozen or so pages of Google. I got over 50 upvotes, and many comments expressed interest in a torrent for this movie as well.Īlso, how is this the "dumbest way possible" to search for a torrent? I couldn't find a link on Google or any of the big torrent search engines. Seems like a pretty reasonable thing to do. Why does that make you so mad and sour?Īnd how does my post pollute r/singularity? I posted in a sub-reddit about the singularity, looking for a movie about the singularity. I don't want to pay for it, and I don't have the ability to either at the moment. I've done my part for him and his ideas, and I've financially and socially supported them. I've gotten friends to legally see Transcendent Man and read Kurzweil's books as well. I've legally seen Transcendent Man and legally read The Singularity is Near. Kurzweil isn't losing a sale if I torrent this movie, because in all likelihood I will never pay for this movie even if it became an option for me. Torrenting a movie is stealing in an abstract way, but in a practical way it isn't. Aside from the price point, this particular content is basically ideal - it's readily available, high quality, and non-DRM. There are many pirates who have plenty of money but pirate because there is no convenient source of the content or that source is DRM'd. tl dr: if you're going to pirate some content, it's best to pirate the DRM only stuff over the non-DRM'd stuff. DRM reduces the value of things by causing them to be non-transferrable and potentially volatile. I only claim that paying for non-DRM supports more content being non-DRM, which is better for everyone. No, I made no claim that pirating was OK, with or without DRM. stealing is stealing, stop trying to pretend otherwise The below is in reply to the edited post:Īlso your argument implies that it is fine to pirate things if you disagree with their policies. Personally, I think a $5 price point is much more reasonable for a digital download of a movie, but we gotta start somewhere.Įdit: The above was in reply to prehistoricswagger when he/she had the above message read "see title" in a slightly flippant manner. People with enough money to their name will read this thread too, and I'd like to give them a heads up that their support for this distribution method is valuable. Machine Intelligence Research InstituteĤ) Be respectful Check out /r/Singularitarianism and the Technological Singularity FAQ.Proponents of the singularity typically postulate an "intelligence explosion", where superintelligences design successive generations of increasingly powerful minds, that might occur very quickly and might not stop until the agent's cognitive abilities greatly surpass that of any human. Futurist Ray Kurzweil predicts the singularity to occur around 2045 whereas Vinge predicts some time before 2030. The term was popularized by science fiction writer Vernor Vinge, who argues that artificial intelligence, human biological enhancement, or brain-computer interfaces could be possible causes of the singularity. The first use of the term "singularity" in this context was by mathematician John von Neumann. Because the capabilities of such an intelligence may be difficult for a human to comprehend, the technological singularity is often seen as an occurrence (akin to a gravitational singularity) beyond which the future course of human history is unpredictable or even unfathomable. The technological singularity, or simply the singularity, is a hypothetical moment in time when artificial intelligence will have progressed to the point of a greater-than-human intelligence. This community studies the creation of superintelligence- and predict it will happen in the near future, and that ultimately, deliberate action ought to be taken to ensure that the Singularity benefits humanity. A subreddit committed to intelligent understanding of the hypothetical moment in time when artificial intelligence progresses to the point of greater-than-human intelligence, radically changing civilization.
